Vertical writing, and columns that break where you ask
Two layout upgrades. First, real vertical writing for top-to-bottom scripts: text set in a vertical writing mode now flows top-to-bottom with its lines stacking to the side, the way it is meant to. Chinese, Japanese and Korean read naturally with each character standing upright; Latin captions and labels set sideways read correctly; a vertical block sizes itself sensibly whether or not you give it a height; and an image sitting inside vertical text stays upright instead of tipping over. Second, multi-column layouts now honour where you ask them to break: push a heading to the top of the next column, keep a figure together with its caption so they are never torn apart, and stop a column leaving a single lonely line stranded at its top or bottom. Pages that use neither vertical writing nor columns are completely unchanged.
